Workshop for Master Trainers on Self Management of Chronic Diseases

Senior Citizen Organization can select candidates from their organization who shall be trained to as Master Trainers on Self Management of Chronic Diseases. Individuals who are interested may also contact us.

Objective of Workshop

  • We have developed, evaluated, and translated this Workshop for fostering Master Trainers on Self Management of Chronic Diseases in older persons for self-management programs for older persons with chronic health problems, as well as caregivers.
  • The Master Trainers are chosen by the Senior Citizen Organization or we welcome any individual who may volunteer to take up the responsibility of training other older persons in the community.
  • Our small-group workshops are given in community settings. They are facilitated by two leaders chosen by Senior Citizen Organisations.
  • The workshops are highly interactive, focusing on building skills, sharing experiences, and support.
  • Our workshop is designed to help people gain self-confidence in their ability to control their symptoms, better manage their health problems, and lead fuller lives.

Our main mission, however, is research. We only develop and offer programs that we test for effectiveness The aim of all of our programs is to improve the triple aims of better health, better health care, and reduced costs. Our proudest achievement is that we are in the path of improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of older persons

Requirements of Training

More than or equal to 50 years of age, male or female

Subjects covered include

  • Common health issues.viz cardiovascular, arthritis, neurodegenerative condition, vision and hearing.
  • Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation,
  • Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance,
  • Healthy diet
  • Appropriate use of medications, polypharmacy.
  • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health care professionals
  • How to evaluate new treatments.
  • Active Ageing

How to select a Master Trainer to represent your organization

  • Look around you.
  • Post the opportunity to become a Master Trainer at your community centre/office.
  • Talk with people in ongoing support groups
  • Post the opportunity on your organisation website
  • As you give talks in the community on any subject, mention this opportunity and take the names of people who might be interested
  • Post a notice in the newsletters of voluntary health organizations
  • Advertise in local newspapers/television cable operators who run free classified ads for volunteers.
  • If you live in a rural area see if you can get a public service announcement.
  • After you have started offering programs ask you leaders to watch for people in their community who they think might make good leaders.

When choosing people to become a Master Trainer there are several considerations

  • It is best if the person has a chronic condition or has been a caregiver for someone with a chronic condition.
  • The person should have experience and comfort with talking before groups
  • The person must be non judgmental.
  • The person may or may not be a health professional or a retired health professional.
  • It is best if the Master Trainer is part of the same community group
  • Master Trainers must have a work schedule that allows them to take two or three times a year to train other elders in their community/state/ city.

Training   Duration

Trainings are 9:00 AM to 1.00 PM, for 3 days.

Workshop fee per candidate

Rs 500/-

Resource Material ,Evaluation and Certification

  • All candidates shall be handed over a resource material .The resource material shall be in printed format and in English.
  • If the local organization wishes they may be given a copy to be translated into their local language.
  • Evaluation of Master Trainers shall be done at the end of the workshop
  • A Certificate of Participation shall be given at the end of the workshop.

Important Information

  • All workshops and trainings are designed to be facilitated by 2 people, so it is important that your organization send atleast 4 people to the training, or they will be unable to implement the program in your organization
  • Your Master Trainers can also train other leaders/group of other elder organization in the city/state
